Ophelia

Does Ophelia love Hamlet? What is her reaction to his odd behavior in Act 2.1? Try to pinpoint her feelings for him.

  1. Despite Hamlets strange behavior Ophelia Still loves him. One of the reasons she loves him is his riches and the thought that one day she could become queen. Even though Hamlet had terrified her she still wanted to be with him because she knew that people would always be watching over him because of his power and she was in no danger, not that he would hurt her. Another reason for her love was to rebel against her father and brother who warned her against being with him. Ophelia thought that by loving Hamlet she could prove a point to her overprotective father.

  2. Ophelia acts as though she loves Hamlet and claims she does, but knowing all that he has recently discovered, knowing that his father was possibly murdered by his uncle and his mother being completely unruly, may just be an outlet. When Hamlet appears in her closet shaking and half undressed she responds in fright. When she is asked if Hamlet wants her love she simply responds with, " My lord, I do not know, But truly I do fear it." Ophelia may simply have been feeling pity on Hamlet, not actually desiring to be his wife or anything of the sort. If Ophelia has realized that there may be no good to come of Hamlet, since he is completely distraught at the moment, then she would also see that he is not going to improve anytime soon.

  3. In act 2.1 Ophelia is worried about Hamlet. She goes to her father and tells him about her interaction with hamlet and tells him how worried she is. She explains how he is unkempt and distraught. Yes, Ophelia does love Hamlet, you can tell by how worried she is about him and by how much she cares about him. You can also tell because earlier in the play she was telling Polonius and Laertes about how much Hamlet loves her and how much she loves him.

  4. I think that Ophelia secretly does love him. Secretly because her family does not approve of him and are constantly telling her otherwise about him. Bringing her confusion and not knowing what to believe of him. At some part i believe that when she talks about what happened earlier that day it seemed as if she had a tone of longing, maybe the fact that there was something more to what happened. She immediately runs to polonius to tell him what had happened. And polonius does not approve of hamlet, making Ophelia think wrongly and blocking any access to her. She replied his letter and denied any way of communication. Making her the source of his misery when in reality she is not. Ophelia is confused about her feelings for Hamlet. When Polonius asks her: "mad thy love?"
Ophelia responds: "My lord, I do not know, But i truly fear it."
she fears his love because one hamlet has gone mad and two her family.

  5. I think that she does have feelings for him, but the things he did in Act 2.1 were unlike his usual self. So I believe that she was just confused by his actions; rather than apalled or scared by them. I think that she does love him, just not the him that came into her bedroom that night. The Hamlet she knew before.

  6. When Hamlet made his scene in front of Ophelia, her reaction was confusion and dismay. At this point in the story, I do not think that Ophelia loves Hamlet. She has thus far made no efforts to seek him out or prove her affection. In addition, in Act 2, scene 1, she even says "But truly I fear it", in regards to Polonius' suggestion of Hamlet's attraction towards her. She has also seemed more than happy to reject him on Polonius' behalf. However, my gut tells me that she might have deeper feelings that have not been expressed yet, but I am just going on what I know so far.

  7. I believe that Ophelia does not love Hamlet, given what we have read so far. She has not come across as a lover to him, maybe just another friend with a lot of feelings, but not a lover. They don't dream about each other, or always talk about each other, they are just 2 people.
Ophelia is shocked at the behavior of hamlet during act 2 scene 1. He is traumatized after seeing the ghost and comes to Ophelia. Having strong feelings for her he approaches her, touching her. Ophelia feels confused and creped out at this, considering it is not like Hamlet at all. She thinks of hamlet as a friend with deep feelings for, but also another boy. Not a lover, but someone she can talk to as a friend, almost like a brother to sister relationship.

  8. I believe Ophelia does love Hamlet but she is more loyal towards her family and her family. She is also concerned by his actions and doesn't know what to think of them so she turns to her father for help. She doesn't want to give into her feelings for Hamlet because she wants to trust what her dad had said to her about Hamlet's love to her not being real or possible. She is completely confused by his actions and turns to the person she trusts the most, Polonius.

  9. I believe that Ophelia does have strong feelings for Hamelet, however, she is trying to contain them for her fathers sake. It is more important to her to obey her father then to chase after Hamlet. I feel that her reaction to Hamlet's behavior was reasonable. Naturally, she was taken aback and slightly scared of Hamlet's actions, because he was acting like a lunatic.

  10. Ophelia does love Hamlet. Her reaction to his odd behavior in Act 2.1, is feeling utter confusion. She has no clue what is troubling Hamlet, and why he is behaving in a distant and reclusive manner. She cares deeply about him, as it is shown in Act 1, when she is discussing him with her brother and father. She wants to be sure he loves her and such, and therefore when he is behaving strangely, she wants to be positive that the problem is fixed, so it won't result in their love ending in turmoil. Since she had been warned about the duties he would soon have to adhere to in his power, she is probably hesitant as to whether he is changing now, because of those duties. This is why Ophelia is so afraid of Hamlet behaving in this uncanny manner. She was warned he would transform, and if the time is now, Ophelia feels it is far too soon.

  11. In my opinion, I don't think Ophelia really loves Hamlet. I think this because in the previous scenes, Polonius banned Ophelia from seeing Hamlet, and instead of refusing, she obeyed. She didn't even sneak out or find a way to see Hamlet. If she really loved Hamlet, I think she'd have snuck out and gone against her father's rules. She also told Polonius of Hamlet's odd behavior. She tells him she is frightened by it. She gives her father the love letter Hamlet wrote, which Polonius reads to the king and queen. I don't think she really loves Hamlet because if she did, she wouldn't have revealed the letter.

  12. There are several reasons why I believe that Ophelia loves Hamlet. One reason, is her constant defense of Hamlet, when talking to Polonius. Another reason, is how in every scene, that she is in, she mentions Hamlet. I think that she finds Hamlet's actions, in act 2 scene 1, odd; which is why she told her father about the event. I also think that she felt as if Hamlet was a completely different person. I think this, because the tonality of this scene made her seem worried about Hamlet.

  13. I do think that Ophelia is deeply in love with Hamlet and that their relationship is true. Although, because of Polonius' criticism for their relationship, she doubts it herself. When Hamlet encounters her in his mangled condition, she questions their love and is confused.

  14. I think she does like Hamlet, but not truly love, because, although she did not say any negative words about Hamlet, she did tell those to her father and even the love letter itself to her father.
her reaction to Hamlet;s strange behavior was "frightened". She was kind of mad at Hamlet so she said she wants to deny the access of Hamlet to her. I think Ophelia resembles Polonius in the way that they are very obedient to the lord, so they tries to look what their lord wants them to look like.
I don't think Ophelia actually feel that Hamlet is annoying her but she says "To speak of horrors, he comes in front of me.", so sounds like she was horrified but if she was that horrified she could have just gone away from Hamlet.

  15. I think Ophelia kind of loves Hamlet, but only because she's so desperate. It appears to me that Ophelia is in love with the idea of love and that's what was fueling her craving for some Hamlet. But I think she loves her father a lot more than she loves Hamlet, so when he didin't approve and told her to stay away from him, she did it. So I think maybe Ophelia was starting to recover from her Hamlet-phase, and here he comes again in Act 2.1. Seeing him so disheveled and crazed I think scared her. She didn't know how she was supposed to react. I think in the moment she was probably stunned and was still in shock when she was reporting to Polonious about it. But what I think will end up happening and going through her head is that she'll end up convincing herself he was going crazy over her, when really he's just crazy.

  16. I think hamlets actions toward ohpelia were misleading for her. Hamlet was confused at the time, about his father being the ghost or not, so he may not have been aware that his actions may be misconstrued. She may be falling in love with Hamlet, but i dont believe that he feels the same. She won't confront hamlet about her love, until she finds out why he acted out in such a strange way. She may also desire to rebel against her father's will because of how " over protective" he is. Polonius has a strong dislike for Hamlet and would hate to see his daughter with Hamlet.

  17. I don't think Ophelia loves Hamlet as much as Hamlet loves Ophelia. Hamlet comes running to her on the verge of hysterics for support. He has also been evidently showcasing his feelings for the world to see, as Laertes and Polonius feel the need to intervene.
Ophelia, on the other hand, seems more detached. She accepts Laertes' and Polonius' suggestions that Hamlet is just flirting with minimal argument. She stops talking to Hamlet, and doesn't seem particularly emotional when Hamlet grabs her wrists and shakes her.
This right now is an unequal relationship, but I think Ophelia could come to love Hamlet over the course of the play.

  18. As of. Act2 Scene1. I personally feel that Ophelia is too confused to know if she really loves Hamlet. I know that she is confused, because she comes and tells her Dad what Hamlet did (took her by the wrist, perused he face, and left abruptly without a goodbye); because she needs clarification or advise from her father because she questions if Hamlet even still loves her. I feel that both Ophelia and Hamlet are currently confused how to feel for each other, due to the many things that are going on in their lives.

  19. During act 2.1, you area aware that Ophelia loves Hamlet due to the last scene with Ophelia and her family. She explains to them her love for Hamlet and that she wants to be with him. She tells both her brother and her father the same thing, but nether of them agree with her and she eventually obey's her father to not be with Hamlet. But that doesn't mean that she doesn't love him.

After Hamlet puts on his little show for her, through her dialog with her father you could tell she was frightened. She also resisted his intentions, in this case it was him grabbing her wrist. She even told her father what he did to her and how he looked when he came in. Even after all this, she still didn't want her father to report Hamlet to the KIng. So her exact feelings for Hamlet are unclear, but it seems like she is frightened by his appearance and what he did but she doesn't want to harm him, therefore she probably still loves him.

Ophelia does love Hamlet. That would be the only reason that she initially doesn't allow her father to bring the incident to the king's attention. She was probably scared but she also seemed sympathetic towards his condition. At this point in the story I would think that she is feeling very confused.

  21. Ophelia actually does love Hamlet, sadly the favor is not returned to her. Seeing that Hamlet had broken into her room, she immeditly though it was over her. However in reality, he found out he was not even that close to her, making him walk out without a word. With no explination for his behavior, she conclude he is "love crazy" which furthar boost her love for him.

  22. Yes she does but because of his wierd behavior and what everyone else is saying to her about him she is kindof drifting away or having mixed emotions about him

  23. I think that Ophelia does love Hamlet but doesn't want to show it because so many people have told her not to love Hamlet. I also think that she doesn't want to love Hamlet anymore because of what she's heard about him but she can't help herself. She is confused about how he acted and doesn't know what to think of it or what he was trying to say to her by it. I think she might be starting to realize how he wouldn't be right for her but she really doesn't want to let him go.

  24. It seems that she loves him. She talked about him to her father and brother. However now she is having second thoughts. She is scared of Hamlet and her encounter. In the end I feel she will stay true to her love for him.

  25. Ophelia seemed to be interested in Hamlet before he went acting mad. But after she saw that, she seemed to be a little scared of him. Her reaction was shocked and a bit scared. She tolled her father what Hamlet has done, and he told her not to go near him. She seems to be interested in him, but since everyone is telling her to stay away from him, she might be loosing intrest in him.
